MANILA, Philippines – The former military rebel group, the Magdalos, are going for 2 Manuels in the May 10 elections.
The Magdalo socio-political movement led by Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV on Wednesday announced their support for Nacionalista Party (NP) presidential candidate Manuel Villar and Liberal Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate Manuel Roxas.
In an interview on ANC, Magdalo spokesman Francisco Acedillo said the Magdalo leadership consulted its alleged 65,000 members nationwide on which candidate they would endorse for the presidential election.
Villar’s lead was only 5% more than that of his closest rival, Sen. Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino III.
Asked why Magdalo members chose Villar over Aquino, Acedillo said: “Consider this a personal bias having come from the military but being a military guy, it goes without saying that there is a premium on leadership. The ability to lead the men under you, I think that played a big role. That’s my bias.”
Acedillo said their support for Villar is based on the following conditions:
* he will not enter into an alliance with President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo;
* he will pursue the Magdalo’s agenda of poverty alleviation, peace in Mindanao, and modernization of the Armed Forces of the Philippines;
* he will push for the release of Magdalo members still under detention such as Trillanes.
Acedillo said Villar accepted these conditions.
The Magdalos were going to support Sen. Francis ‘Chiz’ Escudero but the former Nationalist People’s Coalition leader backed out last year.
Mixed senatorial ticket
Acedillo also announced that the Magdalos would support a mixed opposition senatorial ticket, although half of them come from the NP:
* NP bet Sen. Pia Cayetano;
* NP bet Col. Ariel Querubin
* NP bet Susan Ople
* NP bet Gilbert Remulla
* NP bet Adel Tamano
* NP bet Rep. Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.
* LP bet Brig. Gen. Danny Lim
* LP bet Ruffy Biazon
* Nationalist People’s Coalition bet ‘Tito’ Sotto
* Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) bet Sen. Jinggoy Estrada
* PMP bet JV Bautista
* PMP bet Joey de Venecia.
Acedillo denied that the Magdalo leadership tried to influence its members to favor Villar and senatorial candidates of the Nacionalista Party. He added that the group’s decision is considered final despite an appeal by the LP for a re-balloting.
“The LP along with other parties in this selection process were all consulted. They all had a chance to share their advocacies…Everyone was given a fair shake in the process. This is really a final decision,” he said.
He also denied that Aquino’s stand against violent uprisings influenced the Magdalo members to choose Villar over the LP standard-bearer. Members of the Magdalo group previously took part in the July 2003 takeover of an upscale apartment in Makati City to demand President Arroyo’s resignation.
“We respect his position and he is in the right position to say that. That was not a dealbreaker on our part,” he said. — with a report from dzMM
